Eucalyptus Short Rotation Forestry
- supply of Eucalyptus plugs for planting projects
- supply chain and markets
Short rotation wood supply chains are critical to meeting the existing and forecasted shortfall in supply of roundwood by all timber users in UK. The development of “Combined Heat and Power” plants throughout UK over the next ten years accentuates the current shortage of available roundwood. The use of Eucalyptus trees to maximise wood cellulose on the shortest possible productive rotation is both economically viable and sustainable.
Eucalyptus trees are one of the most efficient photosynthate machines and will sequester carbon at astonishing rates given good forestry management. The high calorific crops will need to be continually thinned over the rotation length to optimise growth and yield.
The yield on some of our Eucalypt plantations is in the region of 40m3 per year per hectare. This equates to around one and a half truckloads of timber per hectare per year. Production thinning could start at four years of age, and clearfell operations at ten years of age will produce 400m3 per hectare.
The UK Forest Industry have established short rotation timber production plantations crops that will start to generate an economic return from four years of age. Mixing biodiversity and productive outcomes is a sign of robust land use with societal benefits.
